Sabah's Bersih 2.0 submits memorandum for free and fair election

KOTA KINABALU: Bersih 2.0 Sabah submitted a memorandum to the state Election Commission director Datuk Md Idrus Ismail to demand for free and fair elections.

Its vice chairman Beverly Joeman said during a courtesy visit to Md Idrus’ office, she had conveyed the organisation’s wish to be recognised as observer during the election process.

“However, Datuk rejected the proposal as there were already three other non-governmental organisations who have become the observers.

“But he said Bersih is allowed to observe 50 metres away from where the election process takes place,” she said, adding that Bersih has also been educating people on the election processes through their seminars.

Other demands highlighted by the NGO included the reformation of the electoral list, advance voting process, automatic registration of voters, a minimum 21-day campaign period, and access to free and fair media coverage among others.

The submission of the memorandum was also conducted simultaneously in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Kuching, and Ipoh.
