Iskandar Malaysia, an ideal gateway for EU into Asean

JOHOR BARU: Iskandar Malaysia is well-positioned to become a platform for companies from the European Union (EU) countries to serve their customers in the Asean region.

Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) chief executive Datuk Ismail Ibrahim said Iskandar Malaysia is well situated in the Asean region for these companies to enter a market with a population of about 650 million.

"With what have been built in Iskandar Malaysia, especially the infrastructures and good communication and connectivity, we believe there will be more companies from the EU that will come here.

"There are good prospects for investors in the fields of medicine, education, logistics and tourism in Iskandar Malaysia," said Ismail.

He said this in a press conference after a roundtable discussion with a delegation from the EU led by its ambassador to Malaysia Maria Castillo-Fernandez, which is on a three day visit to Iskandar Malaysia.

Members of the delegation include the ambassadors of 11 EU countries, all of whom are on a three-day visit here.

The delegation is expected to have an audience with the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and a meeting with Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

They will also visit key development projects in Iskandar Malaysia including the Port of Tanjung Pelepas terminal and the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex.
