Box containing heads, meat of deer and antelope seized in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: Sabah Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) officers foiled an attempt to smuggle wildlife at Sandakan airport yesterday.

District officer Hussein Muin said they were notified by airport auxiliary police about 4pm on the finding of a box containing wildlife body parts.

“During the scanning, the box was seen to have the heads of horned deer and horned antelope, as well as three pieces of meat, including internal organs. The seizure of all animal products weighed about 8.5kg,” he told reporters, adding that the samples of the seizure had been sent to Perhilitan office in Kuala Lumpur.

Hussein said initial investigations showed the box was meant to be sent to Peninsular Malaysia by air.

The department, he said, has identified and called the owner of the box to assist into the investigation.

Hussein said a permit was required to ship animal products out of the state.
