C-Cycle Challenge: 'Cycle your way to good health'

KUALA LUMPUR: The New Straits Times C-Cycle Challenge is not merely a sporting event, but a means to unite the community to achieve a healthy lifestyle, says CIMB Group Holdings Bhd group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz Tengku Abdul Aziz.

Tengku Zafrul, who will be participating in the 35km fun ride, said other than cycling, the race was a good event to get together and promote camaraderie.

“I am quite excited to join the race as it has been a while since I cycled. I look forward to meeting old friends and getting to know new ones,” he said.

On the back of running the Boston Marathon a month ago, Tengku Zafrul said he was currently in dialling down mode and was not aiming at a first-place finish.

“This time I am a bit more relaxed as I just finished the marathon. My teammates and I are trying to finish under one hour, but the terrain comprises some hills, so we cannot be certain.

“In any cycling event, it is important to set a steady pace for the team. This is why I need strong riders.”

Considering himself an active cyclist, Tengku Zafrul said he usually cycled twice a week; once on a weekday and once during the weekend.

“In general, an active lifestyle is gaining popularity among Malaysians. This is a positive change for us.

“Cycling, specifically, is the new golf.

“ It promotes healthy living, it is a good cardio sport and not as painful or boring as running.”

Tengku Zafrul said his love for cycling started a decade ago, when he started to compete in triathlons.

“I had no choice, but to learn how to cycle because in triathlons, you have to run, swim and cycle.

“Slowly, cycling became my No. 1 sport as I really enjoyed it.

“I decided to enter a full marathon about three years ago and realised I cannot train only by running. So, I picked up cycling again after being inactive for a few years.”
