Korean tourist dies during snorkelling near Gaya Island

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly Korean woman on holiday with his family here drowned while snorkelling at Gaya Island near here today.

The body of Mija Lee, 74, was spotted floating near the island by a patrol staff at 11.54am. He immediately pulled her to the beach.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. chandra said the staff had performed a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim but to no avail.

"The staff had also sought help from boatmen to send victim to Sutera Habour and performed the CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

"The victim was then rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead by a doctor," he said.

Chandra said the victim had arrived in the state capital on Friday along with three other family members.

The family boarded a boat from Sutera Habour jetty to Padang Point on Gaya Island for a snorkelling activity this morning.

"A post-mortem will be conducyed to determine the cause of death. At the moment, we classified the case a sudden death," he said.
