Seven petrol station operators to face action for hiring illegal immigrants

SHAH ALAM: Selangor Immigration Department is hauling owners of seven petrol stations here to face action for employing illegal immigrants.

Its director Omran Omar said a special operation carried out yesterday revealed that many station operators continue to employ undocumented immigrants, despite previous warnings.

Omran said the department has issued notices to summon the owners to appear at its Enforcement Division office, and subsequently charged them under the Immigration Act.

He said the department has rounded up 18 immigrants for various offences after screening 49 people during the operation, held between 3.30pm and 7pm.

"Under Op Ikrar, we launched a series of raids at seven petrol stations along the Federal Highway and Persiaran Jubli Perak in Batu 3 Shah Alam.

"The operation saw a total of 18 illegal immigrants, who were employees at the stations, arrested for violating the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Rules 1963. These include working without valid pass, overstaying and abuse of social visit pass.

"It was the second operation against illegal employment at petrol stations held in Shah Alam and Selangor," he said in a statement.

Those detained include 14 Bangladeshi men and four Indonesians, including 2 women.
