Three killed as car slams into tree

BATU PAHAT: Three passengers were killed, and the driver injured when their vehicle

slammed into a tree at KM111 Jalan Johor Baru - Melaka near Koris, here, early this morning.

The accident occurred at about 4 am when the driver lost control of his car, which then crashed into the tree, killing the three passengers on the spot.

The car was heading towards Rengit from Batu Pahat, when the accident happened.

Batu Pahat police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Wahib Musa said the dead were identified as Cheah Chen Kon, 45, Cheng Boon Seng, 49 and Tan Eng Keng, 49, while the driver, who is in his 40, have yet to be identified.

"The driver is believed to have been intoxicated and tired, which caused him to lose control of the car,” said Wahib.

He said it was understood that the four were returning from a dinner where alcohol was served.

The bodies were taken to the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital for post mortem, while the driver was also taken to the same hospital for treatment.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987."
