National Cyber Security Agency taking shape: DPM

PUTRAJAYA: The government is exploring ways of beefing up the country’s cyber security management.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who chaired a high level committee meeting on the proposed National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) today, said several issues have been raised on the matter.

"The committee deliberated on the operations of the National Cyber Coordination and Command Centre," he said in a statement issued after the meeting.

Zahid said the committee also discussed the location of the planned NCSA office and logistics at the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) building in Pulau Meranti, Puchong.

Also mooted were staff and officers' designations and the financial allocation required for all NCSA operations.

Zahid said the Cabinet had decided on Jan 20, last year, to establish the NCSA, which reflects the government's seriousness in addressing various forms of cyber threats.

In principal, the NCSA was enforced on Feb 1 this year under the National Security Council, using existing laws, including the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Defamation Act 1957 and the Sedition Act 1948.
