Thousands in Penang usher in Syawal with Governor

GEORGE TOWN: Thousands of Muslims flocked to the state mosque here to perform the Aidilfitri prayer on the first day of the month of Syawal this morning.

The Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas led a congregation of more than 2,000 people to recite special prayers.

Also present was State Secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus.

After prayers, Abdul Rahman and his consort, Toh Puan Majimor Shariff, greeted the public who had made a beeline to extend their well wishes to the dignitaries on hand.

He and Majimor spent about an hour at the mosque.

Several foreigners, mostly migrant workers, also took the opportunity on their day off to pray at the mosque.

Muslims also visited Penang’s other mosques in droves for prayers and thanksgiving.

Many also visited cemeteries to offer prayers in remembrance of their loved ones.

Among the highlights of today’s state-level celebrations will be an open house hosted by Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya in Balik Pulau this afternoon.
