Committee to meet, discuss means to contain spread of rabies in Serian

KUCHING: The State Disaster Management Committee will meet on Tuesday to discuss efforts to contain the spread of rabies in the Serian district.

The meeting will be chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the committee’s chairman at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Petra Jaya near here.

“Yes, the committee will meet tomorrow,” he told reporters when met at his residence in Stampin here today.

Douglas, however, declined to elaborate on the agenda of the meeting.

It was learnt that the meeting would be held to check on the development of actions taken by the State Health Department and State Veterinary Services Department to contain the outbreak in Serian.

Douglas also declined to elaborate when asked on the outcome a meeting attended by representatives of the two departments and non-governmental organisations including Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).

The New Straits Times learnt that State Local Government and Housing Minister Prof Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian is expected to issue a statement on the situation in the state later today.
