Heavy rain damages buildings in Kota Baru, brings flash floods to Kota Belud

KOTA BARU: Heavy rain here last night brought about damages to several buildings including the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Hospital.

There were however, no reports of casualties in the thunderstorm which started at about 7.20pm.

According to a witness, a part of the roof collapsed and windows were broken in several wards at USM hospital during the thunderstorm.

“We are lucky that no patients, including the children, were harmed,” said the witness.

Apart from that, strong winds also ripped off several signboards along the main road in the town centre.

Over in Kota Belud, the rain early this morning has caused flash floods in several villages here.

As of 8am, the road at Kampung Lingkodon was impassable. The other affected village is Kampung Saduk-Saduk.

The reading of Sungai Abai is also high, at 5m.

The Civil Defence Department here has stated that they will be monitoring areas prone to flooding.
