KK Women's Prison helps former inmates earn living, reintegrate with society

KOTA KINABALU: More than 20 per cent of female inmates released from Sabah prisons have succeeded in gaining employment or starting their own businesses.

Kota Kinabalu Women’s Prison deputy director Fauziah Husin said former inmates are given intensive training through its human resource development plan to ensure that they develop skills and are capable of earning a living upon completing their sentences.

“Among the skills they learn are cooking, sewing and beauty services. (We want them to) acquire skills they can be passionate about.

“We also receive calls from restaurants around the state capital for former inmates who are disciplined and can be hired,” she said after a meet-the-people event at the KK Women’s Prison here.

The Prison Department also counsels inmates on how to reintegrate with society upon release.

At present, there are 272 women inmates at the facility, Fauziah added.
