Acid spill scare at Simpang Kuala school

ALOR STAR: Six firefighters from Jalan Raja Fire and Rescue Department rushed to SMK Simpang Kuala here after receiving a report of an acid spill at the school's utility room today.

The room was located near the staircase and a classroom. It was also used to keep other chemical fluids.

The team arrived at 11.44am, three minutes after receiving the distress call.

State Fire and Rescue Department deputy director (operations) Nazri Zakaria said the team later found that there was a leakage at an acid container which caused the chemical spill.

"It took about 15 minutes to clean up the area using sand.

"Further inspection showed the chemical had expired and the school management has been advised to contact the relevant quarters to dispose the remaining fluid." he said.

Nazri also advised the school administration to move other chemicals in the room to a storage facility away from the classrooms.

He said the current room was not suitable to store chemicals as the stairs in front of it was frequently used by teachers and students.
