Flexible road tax payment on the cards

PUTRAJAYA: The government is studying options of allowing flexible road tax payment for motorists.

Transport Minister Datuk Sri Liow Tiong Lai said this was in line with the insurance detariffication, which came into effect since July 1.

He said the move is targeted to benefit road users based on their vehicle conditions, mileage and traffic offenses' demerits.

He said the system is part of the government's initiatives to award incentives to prudent drivers by reducing road tax charge.

"With the advancement of technology, we can now know road users behaviour, and also their mileage, which is going to reflect into their road tax charge.

"We are confident that we can implement that in the future," he said after attending the signing ceremony of a collabration between Atilze Digital Sdn Bhd and U Mobile Sdn Bhd here today.

Meanwhile, G3 Global Bhd's wholly owned subsidiary, Atilze, is collaborating with U Mobile which will see the latter providing mobile connectivity to facilitate its connected car solutions.

Liow said the collaboration is a timely response to address the challenges on road safety that Malaysia is currently facing.

"Atilze and U Mobile are pioneering and taking the lead in Malaysia to offer such technological innovations that can be applied to improve road safety and reduce road accidents as well as fatalities.

"The Ministry will consider the implementation of Connected Car ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) for commercial vehicles on Malaysian roads that we expect will improve the commercial drivers' driving behaviour to then create safer roads and reduce road fatalities for everyone," he said.
