Bangladeshi human rights activist denied entry into Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Bangladeshi human rights activist Adilur Rahman Khan was denied entry into Malaysia today.

Adilur was barred from entering Malaysia about 4am today at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

He was scheduled to attend a conference on ‘The Abolition of the Death Penalty in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific’, organised by Anti Death Penalty Asia Network, Together Against the Death Penalty, and the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.

Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali, when contacted, said immigration checks revealed that Adilur’s name was in the ‘Not To Land’ list, which required his entry to be referred to another enforcement agency.

“Immigration had referred the case (to the enforcement agency involved) and they had recommended denying him entry,” he said, adding the immigration officer involved had followed the standard operating procedures.

Mustafar added that the man was treated well at the holding area while waiting for the airline to manage for deportation to his country of origin on the first available flight.

All matters concerning the individual, including his welfare and food, will have to be borne by the airline.

Adilur will be sent to his home country via flight MH112 at 8.05pm.

In a statement earlier today, Bersih 2.0 expressed concern about the treatment of Adilur. The group demanded an explanation from Home Ministry and Immigration Department on the reason behind the ban.
