Children still traumatised after near-death experience at Teruntum complex

KUANTAN: The water tank rupture incident at Teruntum complex here last Sunday which led to concrete slabs raining down on cars, motorcycles and pedestrians below, has left a huge impact on a family of four.

Teacher Nur Akmal Nordin, 39, his wife Zahidah Zakaria, 38, and their two children had just emerged from the building when they heard a loud sound followed by a huge volume of water landing on them.

Nur Akmal said he does not dare to think about the incident as he and his family were just inches away from death, and was grateful that he could drag his wife and children to safety.

"One of the policemen later told my family that we were lucky as a huge concrete slab had landed not far from us. My heart sank when I saw my children who were shocked by the incident.

"My daughter Nur Aliah Maisarah suffered cuts to her mouth and required stitches, and she lost two of her teeth. My son Ahmad Aisy Ammar received five stitches to the head and suffered minor cuts on his back," he said when met at his house here today.

Nur Akmal said eight-year-old Nur Aliah is no longer talkative after the incident. He believes the incident has left her and her three-year-old younger sibling traumatised.

The SK Kampung Belukar teacher said he was grateful to the public whom upon noticing that he and his family were soaked in water, immediately provided help.

“People came running to help us; some of them comforted my children while others made arrangements to take us to the hospital,” he said.

Kompleks Teruntum Joint Management Board manager Mohd Zaid Harun visited the family to hand over donations today.

In the 1pm incident, a water tank atop the building burst, causing concrete slabs to crash on the ground, damaging several motorcycles and cars that were parked below. The complex was immediately closed before it reopened on Tuesday.
