Court for sexual crimes against children: 11 out of 62 cases resolved so far

KUALA LUMPUR: The Special Court For Sexual Crimes Against Children in Putrajaya has solved 11 cases since it started operations earlier this month.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said since the special court started operations on July 4, a total of 62 cases had been registered.

"Out of the 62, 11 have been solved, 25 are being mentioned while 26 are still on trial.

"Cases registered under this court will be solved or disposed in one year since the date of registration," Azalina told the Dewan Rakyat today.

She was responding to a question from Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad (BN-Parit Sulong) who asked on the number of sexual crimes against children cases that were being tried in court.

Azalina also said the government was looking at expanding the special court to all states.

She said the court had special infrastructure such as a court recording transcription system, an audiovisual system, a child witness room and a waiting room for child witnesses.

"The rooms are child-friendly. The rooms not only help vulnerable witnesses under 18-years-old record their statements without having to face the accused."

The court, said to be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on June 22.
