MAKNA launches third halfway house for cancer patients

KOTA BARU: The National Cancer Council (MAKNA) today launched its third halfway house; a temporary accomodation for cancer patients at Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM) in Kubang Kerian.

The event was launched by HUSM deputy director (clinical) Dr Nik Min Ahmad. Also present was MAKNA general manager Farahida Mohd Farid.

Farahida said the objective of the halfway house was to provide shelter to patients especially those waiting to undergo treatment at HUSM.

"Most patients have to travel a great distance from their homes to the hospital. They might face financial problems as cancer treatment requires frequent visits to the hospital.

"We hope that by the setting up of the halfway house, will encourage patients to get their treatment more often, especially those from the remote areas," she said.

She said HUSM's halfway house, located about two km from HUSM, was the third set up by MAKNA in the country and the first in the east coast.

Farahida said the other two houses were located in Johor and Penang.
