Malaysia Pavilion inspiring green growth conversations at Expo 2017

When the Malaysia Pavilion officially opened its doors at EXPO 2017 in June this year, Malaysia set out on a mission to create debate and awareness on the impact that energy management has on the lives of people and that of the planet.

Now, with just weeks to go before the global event about “Future Energy” comes to a close, Malaysia has and still continues to generate green growth conversations at the Malaysia Pavilion.

The Malaysia Pavilion, which is one of the most visited pavilions at EXPO 2017, has successfully struck a balance between championing Malaysia’s technological advances and best practices in green energy, as well as showcasing our unique Malaysia, Truly Asia culture. It has been described as one of the most interactive and among the best pavilion experiences at EXPO 2017.

Deputy-Commissioner of the Malaysia Pavilion and Advisor to the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Loo Took Gee, explained that the popularity of the Malaysia Pavilion is testament to the success of its content in showcasing a complicated topic like ‘Future Energy’ in a more interactive and engaging manner.

Carrying the theme ‘Powering Green Growth’, the Malaysia Pavilion has received positive feedback from officials and visitors alike that our content on renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable growth to display Malaysia’s commitment to decarbonise our economy is inspiring and informative,” she said.

Another unique quality of the Malaysia Pavilion is its weekly-themed business programme that includes talks and panel discussions. Each week takes on a different theme that reflects Malaysia’s leadership in various fields of green energy, green technology and the economy, such as green financing, education, sustainable cities and green innovation.

Increasingly, visitors are referring to the Malaysia Pavilion as the “Butterfly Pavilion” due to the larger-than-life butterfly on its front façade. The butterfly – specifically Malaysia’s national butterfly, the Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing – symbolises our endeavour to create a Butterfly Effect, a phenomenon that stipulates that a minor change in one part of our planet can have a larger impact in another part of the world.

“It is our belief that small actions can lead to large effects; that a relatively small country like Malaysia can inspire changes in green growth on a global scale. With this belief, we hope to set in motion a Butterfly Effect that begins with Green Growth conversations inspired at the Malaysia Pavilion, and hopefully result in a world powered by Green Energy,” said Loo.

To further encourage Green Growth conversations beyond our Pavilion walls, Malaysia has committed to add one Watt of solar power generation for every one social media post that inspires Green Growth with the hashtag #Wattif throughout EXPO 2017. By asking a simple question of “Watt if?” Malaysia is asking EXPO delegates and visitors to share their social energy for a green purpose.

Just like how the flutter of a butterfly’s wings in Malaysia might create tiny changes in the atmosphere and subsequently affect weather changes in Kazakhstan, the simplest of questions might just inspire big ideas to create a world powered by Green Energy.
