Locals, tourists amass at Dataran Bandaraya to view Johor royal wedding live onscreen

JOHOR BARU: Excitement was clearly in the air among the large crowd gathered at Dataran Bandaraya to witness the wedding of Tunku Tun Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Sultan Ibrahim and Dennis Muhammad Abdullah.

The royal wedding's sitting-in-state ceremony at the Istana Besar, was broadcast live on two giant screens.

Many families found their own spots on the field to watch the grand event.

Although there were no tents or chairs, members of the public came in droves and brought with them rolled mats. Some even packed food for a picnic.

S. Sunita, 43, said she was thrilled to watch Tunku Tun Aminah's wedding ttogether with her mother S. Rajes, 64, and seven-year old daughter S. Nikita.

"My daughter told me she wanted to see the Johor princess' wedding live. To her, Tunku Tun Aminah is like a fairytale princess. My daughter was so excited to join in the festivities," said Sunita.

Marcel Vink, 43, a tourist from the Netherlands, said he deliberately wanted to vacation in Johor today to witness the wedding.

He said that he lived in the same housing estate as Dennis in north Amsterdam.

"I wanted to feel the festivity among Johoreans who are celebrating the wedding. I chose to be here at the square to watch with the rest of the people," said Vink.

Another visitor, Hoo Hock Hian, 50, was at the square with his wife and 16- year old son.

"I am on holiday and I brought my family from China here to witness the grand wedding.

"It is their first time seeing this and the entire family is happy for the princess and her husband. We wish them love and prosperity," said Hoo.

About 1,200 guests including members of royalty, heads of state and heads of government attended the sitting-in-state ceremony at the Throne Room of Istana Besar, here tonight.
