JOHOR BARU: A bathing ceremony in accordance with royal Johor tradition was held for newlyweds Tunku Tun Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Sultan Ibrahim and Dennis Muhammad Abdullah today.
Held at the nine-tier pavilion at Bukit Bintang at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Istana Besar, the ceremony at 4pm began with the newlyweds’ arrival.
The princess and her husband, dressed in pale blue Baju Kurung Teluk Belanga and Baju Melayu Teluk Belanga, respectively, took part in the ceremony while seated at the pavilion.
Johor mufti Datuk Muhammad Tahrir Shamsudin began the event with the recital of doa.
Later, Permaisuri Johor Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah performed the 'menepung tawar', followed by Raja Dihilir Perak Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnain Sultan Idris Shah.
Also present at the ceremony were the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and his consort Che' Puan Khaleeda Bustamam, as well as the rest of the Johor royal family and state dignitaries.
Tunku Tun Aminah and Dennis descended the pavillion about 4.45pm before a closing doa was recited by Tahrir.
A bathing ceremony is common in many big events for the Johor royal family, including coronations and weddings. A similar ceremony was held for Sultan Ibrahim and Raja Zarith Sofiah during the ruler's coronation two years ago.
Tunku Tun Aminah, 31, married Dennis, 28, yesterday in a day-long ceremony steeped in Johor royal customs and traditions.
