RMN recovers body in USS John S McCain collision search area

JOHOR BARU: A body believed to be one of the 10 crew sailors of USS John S. McCain was found by the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) at 3.45pm today.

A statement from the RMN said the body, which is yet to be identified was recovered 8 nautical miles north west of the location where the the United States navy warship collided with a merchant tanker yesterday.

The discovery of the body was made by the RMN ship KD Handalan which was involved in the search and rescue in its designated sector today.

The statement said that the RMN transfered the body to its frigate vessel KD Lekiu and it planned to surrender the remains to the US Navy tomorrow.

"The Royal Malaysian Navy remains resolute in our effort to continue with the search together with the other agencies and navies.

"Our thoughts and prayers are to the victim families," the statement said.

This latest discovery occurred the same day when divers found other human remains inside the sealed compartments of the USS John S. McCain, which is now docked at the Changi naval base in Singapore.

A total of 10 sailors were missing another five injured when the United States navy guided-missile destroyer, USS John S. McCain collided with the Liberian-registered Alnic MC tanker east of Singapore at 5.24am yesterday.
