RMN hands over remains of USS John S. McCain sailor to US Navy

KUANTAN: The Navy has handed over remains of one of the sailors of USS John S. McCain to the United States navy today.

The remains was identified by the crew of the US navy's SH-60 Seahawk helicopter, which had landed aboard KD Lekiu at 8.30am.

After the identification was done, the body was taken aboard the helicopter which departed at 9.48am, and headed back to Sembawang in Singapore.

"The RMN remains resolute in our effort to continue with the search together with the other agencies and navies.

"Our thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of those involved in the tragic incident," a statement issued by the navy read.

RMN recovered the body 8 nautical miles northwest of the location where the US Navy warship collided with a tanker.

It was recovered at 3.45pm yesterday. The body was discovered by the crew of RMN's ship KD Handalan, which was involved in search-and-rescue efforts.

The discovery occurred the same day divers found other remains in the sealed compartments of the destroyer, which is docked at the Changi Naval Base in Singapore.

Ten sailors went missing and another five injured when the warship collided with the Liberian-registered MV Alnic MC tanker east of Singapore at 5.24am on Monday.
