Perlis MB wants culprits behind BNM forex scandal to face justice

KANGAR: Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man said those responsible should face the music for concealing Bank Negara Malaysia's RM31.5 billion foreign exchange (forex) losses.

He said the role of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI), formed to probe the losses which occurred between 1991 and 1994, allegedly hidden from the central bank, is crucial to uncover the truth.

He said the RCI should continue and complete its investigation on the mammoth losses. Analysts have speculated that the actual losses could run up to RM154 billion based on compound interest and foreign exchange over the last 25 years.

“Those responsible should be made to stand trial before a court of law for hiding the truth and for the losses,” he said.

The losses reportedly occurred during the administration of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

At the time, the central bank had reportedly ventured into speculative currency trading and forex trading with large sums of money.
