Najib: Govt studying various views before deciding on RCI over Memali incident

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is studying various views before making a decision on whether it will form a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the Memali Siege.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the government has not rejected the possibility of holding the RCI, provided that it centres on establishing facts and truths about the incident.

"It (such RCI) must benefit us, in terms of seeking facts and truths (on the incident).

"For now, we will look into views of many, including those involved and affected, before making a decision," Najib told a press conference after chairing the Umno Supreme Council meeting today.

The Memali incident, which took place in 1985, saw 18 including four policemen killed in a bloody clash between authorities moving in to arrest Pas figure Ibrahim Mahmud, and villagers defending the former.

The issue resurfaced after a question on the controversy was thrown to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's Nothing to Hide 2.0 forum, which later on descended into chaos.
