Litterbugs face RM250 fine in Melaka; no discounts to be handed out

MELAKA: Some 108 tourists and locals were issued with notices for littering during an intensive spot check operation by enforcement authorities on four days.

Melaka Historic City Council mayor Datuk Zainal Hussin said the notices were issued on Aug 19 (41 notices), Aug 20 (18 notices), Aug 26 (24 notices) and Aug 27 (25 notices).

“We have plainclothes enforcement officers going around the Melaka Sentral, Banda Hilir, Mahkota Parade, Jonker Walk and Klebang areas to issue notices against those caught for littering.

“Once they are issued with the notice, they must pay RM250 or risk having legal action taken against them,” he said.

Zainal said the local council would also continue clamping down on litterbugs in the city to protect the image of the state as a tourist destination.

“Tourists and locals should not be surprised if they are approached by enforcement officers. Enforcement officers would carry along their council identification cards and issue on the spot notices against those caught littering,” he said.

Zainal added that the local council will not consider giving discounts for such offences.

Meanwhile, he said Jalan Hang Tuah and Jalan Tun Mamat would be closed from 6pm today for the pre-Merdeka celebrations.

The roads will remain closed until after midnight on Merdeka Day.
