US navy ship USS Coronado to drop anchor in Lumut this month

KUALA LUMPUR: American navy ship the USS Coronado (LCS-4) will be paying a port visit to Lumut, Perak this month.

In a statement issued today, the United States Embassy said the visit will see the ship’s crew interacting with counterparts from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), as well as enjoying Malaysia’s world-renowned hospitality.

The USS Coronado’s crew will also participate in a series of community relations events focused on further strengthening ties with their Malaysian partners.

The Embassy said more details on the visit will be announced in the weeks to come.

In 2014, the USS Coronado became the fourth littoral combat ship, the second of the Independence variant, commissioned into service.

The LCS vessels were designed to be high-speed, shallow draft multi-mission ships capable of operating independently or with an associated strike group.

They were pressed into service to defeat growing littoral threats and provide access and dominance in coastal waters.

The Embassy said the commanding officer is CDR Douglas K. Meagher.
