Malaysian writers call for witdrawal of Nobel prize from Suu Kyi over violence against Rohingya

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federation of National Writers Association of Malaysia (Gapena) and a coalition of 22 groups have urged for Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s Nobel Peace Prize to be revoked.

Their call is on grounds of continuing violence against the Rohingya people in Rakhine, Myanmar.

Gapena chief 1 Datuk Zainal Abidin Borhan said the Nobel prize should be revoked as Suu Kyi did not adhere to the principle of peace and humanity.

“Her action shows that she is cruel and inhumane. Gapena also calls on Malaysia to hold an emergency meeting with other Asean foreign ministers to resolve the problem.

“We also urge Malaysia to call for a meeting with OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) to discuss on suitable actions to save the dignity of Rohingya people,” he said in a statement.

Zainal said the United Nations should hold a special session as soon as possible, and for people who valued peace to pressure Suu Kyi to stop the cruelty against Rohingya.

“It is sad to watch the tyranny of the Myanmar’s regime against 1.2 million Rohingya. Suu Kyi, who is a part of the regime is also responsible.

“The sadistic elimination on the Rohingya is the most cruel action that violates the principles and values of humanity,” he said.

It was reported that the latest violence in Myanmar erupted after alleged attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army on police outposts in Rakhine on Aug 25.

The incident had forced nearly 90,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh.
