Storm wreaks havoc in Alor Star, Baling

ALOR STAR: A severe thunderstorm wreaked havoc in the city and Baling this evening, leaving several vehicles and houses damaged by uprooted trees.

The raging wind during the one-hour dowpour, which started at 5pm, also saw traffic flow being disrupted along the Plus Expressway near Alor Star.

An uprooted tree forced the left lane of KM43 of the highway, from Alor Star (north) toll plaza to Hutan Kampung, to be temporarily closed to make way for clean-up works.

An advertising billboard at one of the main junctions in the city also collapsed in the process.

However, no injury have been reported as of 6.30pm.

In Taman Kenari, residents said two cars and a motorcycle were damaged when the zinc roof of a garage collapsed.

Meanwhile, in Baling, 50 houses were damaged during the thunderstorm which saw at least one car damaged after being crushed by a fallen tree.

Among villages affected are Kampung Banggol Chicar, Kampung Tengah Kupang, Lela, Tanah Periok, Tiak, Kupang and Kuala Pegang.

Baling Disaster Management secretariat Mohd Faizol Ab Aziz said fortunately, no injury was reported in the 30-minute long rain.
