Patriotic short films by Petronas, Maxis remind us about what's important

KUALA LUMPUR: Local companies are lending their support to produce short films that promote patriotism and unity in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.

Petronas’s short film, titled “Piala Taman Thomas”, reminds Malaysians of the glory days when national badminton players won championships, including renowned large-scale team competitions, like the Thomas Cup in 1992.

The four-minute film, which features badminton legends Rashid Sidek and Foo Kok Keong, reminds Malaysians to have confidence and a fighting spirit.

The film also featured the patriotic song “Fikirkan Boleh”, which was popular during the 1990s.

Other great athletes were also highlighted in the film, including national squash champion Datuk Nicol David, national diver Pandelela Rinong and former national football player Mokhtar Dahari, who was popularly known as “SuperMokh” for his remarkable performance in the sport.

Petronas is known for its heartwarming commercials.

Many of the company’s best-loved commercials were produced by late filmmaker Yasmin Ahmad.

Maxis, on the other hand, produce a comical ad that educates people about Malaysia’s unique and wonderful qualities and its various attractions.

The 3 minutes and 38 seconds film, titled “Buatan Malaysia” (Malaysian Made), features a boy named Mohd Nazmi who dreams of travelling abroad.

His schoolmates’ photos and social media updates about their vacations abroad made Nazmi envious as his father could only bring him on holidays locally.

Nazmi, who later feels guilty for begrudging his father for not bringing him abroad, decides to plan a vacation with his father to explore local attractions.
