Ministry to provide counselling to survivors of tahfiz school fire

KUALA LUMPUR: Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will provide counselling for the survivors of the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz school fire tragedy.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said their family members would also be given counselling to help them overcome the trauma from the tragedy.

She said the ministry had ordered its officers to assist the victims and their parents to support them psychologically.

"We have instructed the officers in charge of counselling department to assist the survivors and their next-of-kin.

"We want to ensure that they have the moral support from the ministry and we will continue to give them the counselling treatment even after the tragedy,"

"The officers will assist them at the hospital and their homes," she said after visiting the fire survivors who were warded at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (KLH) here today.

When asked if the parents still wanted to send their children to the same school, Rohani said they had insist on doing so despite the tragedy.

She said Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah was just a temporary school for the students.

"Renovation works for a new tahfiz school nearby is still ongoing. The parents still want to send their children to the same school," she added.

Rohani also said the seven survivors were in stable condition including two students who were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of KLH.

Meanwhile, KLH Emergency and Trauma Department head Prof Datuk Sri Dr Abu Hassan Asaari Abdullah said three of the seven victims would be discharged soon.

"However, two victims who are still in critical condition have to recover first. It will take them about three weeks to recover from the trauma and injuries," he said.
