Early morning downpour causes flash floods in the mainland

GEORGE TOWN: At least 15 main roads on the mainland were submerged in 100-400mm of floodwaters following continuous downpour in the early hours today.

Among them were Taman Nibong Tebal, Kampung Sethu, Jalan Bukit Tengah, Taman Senangin and Taman Mutiara.

At least 30 kampung houses were reportedly submerged in floodwaters in Kampung Baru Simpang Empat.

On the island, Jalan Tun Sardon in Balik Pulau has been hit with a landslide and fallen trees.

Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes.

According to an update on the Penang Island City Council Facebook page, clearing works are ongoing.

The morning showers also resulted in traffic moving at a snail's pace along Jalan Masjid Negeri and Lebuhraya Thean Teik.

The council also advised the public to be careful when travelling and to plan their journey well.

Any complaints on floods, landslides or fallen trees, can be channelled directly to the council's hotline at 04-2637000 or 04-2637637.

There are no reports of flash floods on the island so far.
