Tahfiz centre looking for temporary location

KUALA LUMPUR: The management of the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah (DQI) Tahfiz religious school in Jalan Keramat Ujung here is still looking for a suitable location for their temporary learning sessions before they are permitted to use their newly upgraded building.

Its principal Mohd Zahid Mahmood said the sessions needed to begin by early November while the opening of the new building, scheduled to be in operation next month, was postponed and could only be used early next year.

“There are several places that have been offered for us to operate temporarily but we need to find an institution is approved by the Fire and Rescue Department and not located too far away,” he said when met by reporters here today.

He said the temporary tahfiz centre should operate at an institution based premises and not at a residential lot due to its unsuitability.

Mohd Zahid, who still grieved over the death of 21 students and two teachers at the DGI tahfiz centre, acknowledged that the fire tragedy that claimed their lives had opened the eyes of many parties and to improve the education of tahfiz centres nationwide.

“Their deaths had seen the welfare of all tahfiz centres being taken seriously with many allocations being announced and many initiatives were received such as free wiring to tahfiz educational institutions nationwide, especially from the caring government,” he said.

It is understood that Mohd Zahid would meet police investigating officers to give statements to facilitate further probe into the case today.

On Sept 14, 21 students and two teachers, who also worked as wardens at the tahfiz centre perished in the fire which broke out at the hostel on the third floor of the building at 5.15 am. - Bernama
