Kedah floods: Classes as usual on Monday for schools doubling as flood relief centres

JITRA: SK Seri Banai here will be closed tomorrow to allow clean-up work at it classrooms that were inundated by floodwaters a few days ago.

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said the school session is expected to resume on Tuesday after the clean-up work is completed.

He said schools which are being used as evacuation centre will resume it session as normal tomorrow.

“For schools that are being used as evacuation centre, the school session will continue as usual and the evacuees seeking shelter at the schools will be placed at suitable rooms for their comfort,” he told reporters after visiting flood victims at the SMK Seri Mahawangsa relief centre here today.

The schools currently used as relief centres in Kota Star district are SK Titi Gajah, SK Alor Mengkudu, SK Bukit Hijau, SK Seri Gunung, and SK Bukit Pinang.

Another three schools, SK Kodiang Lama, SK Jitra 2, and SMK Seri Mahawangsa are being used as relief centres in Kubang Pasu district.

Ahmad Bashah said the flood situation in Kedah has improved due to good weather condition since yesterday.

He said the number of evacuees increased in certain areas due to the downstream flow of water in the Padang Terap district.

On the RM100 cash aid to flood victims, Ahmad Bashah said it will be given immediately to all victims who sought shelter at relief centres. The victims must also register with the state Welfare Department.

He said the one-off aid would also be given to those who have return to home after the flood situation in their areas improved.
