M'sia, Indonesia to collaborate on strengthening Asean's higher education sector

JAKARTA: Asean can be a force to be reckoned with in the global higher education market if member countries, particularly Malaysia and Indonesia, share information, learn from each other’s experiences and leverage on each other’s strengths in the sector.

Addressing some 40 Malaysian students studying at various Indonesian institutions of higher learning and senior staff of the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta during a dinner hosted by the Malaysian Ambassador here yesterday, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said Malaysia can learn about how Indonesia carries out its waqf programme in the higher education sector, and share the secrets behind the success of various youth volunteer programmes at Indonesian universities.

”From us, they want to learn about redesigning education – to align education with the fourth industrial revolution, as well as find out how we made headways in international university rankings,” he said.

Idris is currently on a three-day visit to Jakarta to conduct a courtesy call on Indonesia’s Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education, Professor H. Mohamad Nasir; and to hold a bilateral meeting between the two Ministries.

On Monday, he will also deliver a keynote speech titled “Redesigning Higher Education for the Future and the 4th Industrial Revolution: A Malaysia-Indonesia Experience” at the Future Of Modern Education exhibition organised by Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS).

Other speakers at the event include the National Council of Professors CEO Professor Datuk Dr Raduan Che Rose, who will be speaking on Education and Human Capacity Development; and Universiti Sains Malaysia vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Asma Ismail on Innovations in Postgraduate Studies.

A total of 18 Malaysian public and private universities will run booths for promotion purposes at the exhibition.

Other than the talks, EMGS will be also be holding seminars and meetings with teachers, recruitment agents, Indonesian government bodies and officials from Indonesia’s Higher Education Ministry.
