KOTA BARU: The Regent of Kelantan Dr Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra has called on Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) to set up a task force which would plot a new strategy for the university’s development.

The Regent, who is UMK’s chancellor, said the task force will be responsible for ensuring that the development of education, research, management, the co-curriculum, and students’ academic affairs is carried out smoothly.

"I realise that UMK has achieved many successes in the last 10 years, but it still has a distance to go, and along the way, there will be a lot of challenges.

"Therefore, UMK must find a new strategy plan which is focused and structured. At the same time, this can help the state in various sectors, such as tourism, forestry, bringing in investment and also in preserving the environment," he said.

The Regent was speaking during UMK's 7th convocation at its city campus in Pengkalan Chepa here.

A total of 2,461 UMK graduates will receive their scrolls during the four-day convocation, which ends on Thursday.

Present at the function was UMK vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mortaza Mohamed.

A highlight of the event was the bestowing of an honorary doctor of philosophy degree (sustainable science) upon Tun Jeanne Abdullah.
