108 illegals arrested in Kuching

THE state Immigration Department has rounded up 108 illegal immigrants during a raid on a premises producing wood products here on Saturday.

The department, in a statement yesterday, said 106 of the foreigners arrested were from Indonesia, while the remaining were from India and Bangla-desh.

“Checks showed 61 of the illegal immigrants, including 23 women, all from Indonesia, had stayed in the state with expired travel documents.

“A total of 37 Indonesians, a man from Bangladesh and an Indian man failed to produce valid documents during the raid.

“Six workers at the factory from Indonesia did not have valid work permits,” said the statement.

Two other Indonesian men were arrested for flouting Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.

The department also conducted raids on two premises in Sibu. No arrests were made.

State Immigration Department director Ken Leben said efforts were ongoing to ensure that there would be no illegal immigrants in the state.

“We will not compromise with any employer found protecting illegal immigrants in the state,” he said.
