PD hotel roof collapse: Energy Commission inspects water heater

KUALA LUMPUR: Preliminary investigations found that there was a potential damage to the storage water heater installed in the Avillion Hotel at Jalan Pantai, Port Dickson which caused the roof to collapse, said the Energy Commission.

In a statement, the commission said it was conducting further inspection to identify the cause of the damage.

“The hotel has been instructed to stop the use of the water heater until the inspection completed.

“Usually, the storage type water heaters are equipped with safety features to prevent over-pressure in the tool that may cause explosions.

“We advise all consumers using the storage water heater to make frequent checks for at least every six months.

“Consumers are advised to get their supplier to do checks on their appliance,” the statement said.

The statement also listed out few things that consumers should be mindful of when using the storage water heaters.

Among the things were by buying a water heater that had been approved by the commission and labelled with SIRIM safety label.

“Consumers should also ensure that a 10 mA or low sensitivity residual current device should be installed on the wiring system that supplies electricity to the water heater.

“The water heater should also be equipped with a Pressure Relief Valve (PRV). Make sure PRV is not closed or blocked by impurities. If PRV is connected to drainage, the drainage must not clog.

“Please ensure the PRV is manually checked for every six months to ensure it does not rust, leak and operates perfectly,” it said.

The PRV should also be replaced in every five years by an authorised person and please ensure the appliance is equipped with added safety features such as isolation barrier and water inlet and outlet.
