Kedahans exhorted to set up more women's organisations

ALOR STAR: Although Kedah’s adult female population is 1.5 million, the number of organisations representing women in the state is proportionally low.

State Women and Welfare Committee chairman Datuk Suraya Yaacob said to date, only 86 women-related organisations have been registered in Kedah.

As such, Suraya, who is also the Agriculture and Agro-based and Entrepreneurs Development Committee chairman is calling on Kedah women to form more organisations focussed on benefitting them and others.

"By having more women organisations, we could organise more seminars and workshops to prepare them to face current and future challenges.

"(Such organisations would also help) women (receive and share verified information for their own benefit, as opposed to) spreading just any information they obtain from social media platforms which is not verified by the authorities.

"Such information could be inaccurate or (full of) half-truths, so by having more women organisations, we would be able to spread accurate information to women in the state," Suraya said after opening the state-level Women and Single Mothers Organisations 2017 at Dewan Serbaguna Anak Bukit here on Tuesday.
