IS eyeing Malaysia to strengthen position in Southeast Asia

SHAH ALAM: The Islamic State (IS) is eyeing Malaysia to strengthen its position in Southeast Asia and to recruit more followers.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the focus was on Malaysia, since it is among the Muslim majority countries which are still safe and peaceful.

“Many terrorists see Malaysia as a place for them to recruit new members and to garner support from the huge Muslim population here.

“Besides, if any militant attacks were to happen here, groups like IS will view it as a success at having created chaos and in penetrating our defences,” he said.

Nur Jazlan was speaking to reporters after chairing a meeting with state Malaysian Drug Prevention Association and National Anti-Drugs Agency officials.

Nur Jazlan said police have been doing a great job at foiling terror attacks in the past, such as the IS-linked Abu Sayyaf militant group’s plan to attack the closing ceremony of the Sea Games, last month.

“Police are constantly monitoring their activities. They are also looking at how and where the militants obtained their weapons from.

“Credit must be given to the men in blue for their intelligence work. Our surveillance and monitoring will continue to ensure peace and stability in the country.

“Besides, we have learnt from past experiences where Malaysians were detained for links with militant groups. We will use the experience gained to combat terrorism,” he added.
