AG Chambers to monitor investigation on MACC chief's alleged illicit affair

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) will set up a taskforce to monitor investigation on allegations involving Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad.

It was reported that there have been allegations, which surfaced online recently, accusing Dzulkifli of having an extramarital affair.

Dzulkifli said the allegations were made to tarnish his reputation and to discredit MACC’s efforts in combating corruption.

In a statement today, Attorney-General Tan Sri Apandi Ali said he received queries from the public and journalists relating to reports made against Dzulkifli.

“In view of the seriousness of the allegation that can affect the integrity of Dzulkifli, AGC has formed a task force on Oct 16 to closely monitor the investigations of the alleged offences under section 498 of the Penal Code and other related offences.

“On this note, AGC would like to caution and remind all parties from making any comments that can jeopardise the ongoing investigations,” he said.

Apandi said in line with the current prosecutorial policy’s best practices, the AGC ensures that the investigations would not discourage whistleblowers or competent witnesses from coming forward to assist with the investigation so that the truth shall prevail.

“The AGC would like to assure the public that the Attorney General, in his capacity as the Public Prosecutor as provided under Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution, shall exercise his discretion on this matter, as in all other matters, judiciously and in accordance with the law, be it procedural or substantive law. AGC is steadfast in upholding justice, and the Rule of Law.”

Meanwhile Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun had earlier said that police had received a report about a senior MACC official who was allegedly involved in a secret relationship with a married woman.

He added that police are investigating the allegations under Section 498 of the Penal Code.

If found guilty, a person could be imprisoned up to two years or fined, or both.
