Kota Belud flood victims expected to return home Sunday as weather improves

KOTA KINABALU: Flood victims in Kota Belud district are expected to gradually return to their homes Sunday as the weather improves and water levels at rivers receding.

District officer Abdul Gari Itam said as of 4.30pm, the weather was cloudy but it has not been raining.

“If the situation persists and water levels continue to recede, then they can go back tomorrow,” he said when contacted.

The latest figure shared by the fire and rescue operations centre at 3.30pm stated that 2,389 villagers in Kota Belud and Tuaran have been evacuated.

The water level at Sungai Kadamaian has gone down to 0.39 metre (normal level) from 0.56 metre at 10am, while Sg Tempasuk reduced to 4.62 metre (warning level) from 4.82 metre previously and Sg Abai level went from 5.64 metre (danger level) to 5.44 metre (warning level).

Operations to monitor and rescue any remaining flood victims at villages in both district continues as of 2pm, according to the team at the operations centre.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim is also expected to arrive tonight to be briefed on the flood situation. He will later visit the landslide victims in Penampang and relief centres in Kota Belud.
