Floodwaters recede in Kota Belud, but evacuees remain at over 2,000

KOTA BELUD: Of the ten flood relief centres operating in the district since floods struck the area this week, two centres in Tuaran were closed at noon today.

District officer Abdul Gari Itam said evacuees at the remaining centres have been advised to stay put, as the situation is still not safe.

As of this morning, the number of Kota Belud flood evacuees remains at 2,132, a rise from last night.

"We cannot discount that some evacuees may have returned to their homes at their own risk this morning.

"The water level is receding, and even though there was no rain last night and this morning, we will continue to monitor the situation before deciding (on allowing evacuees to return home)," Abdul Gari said when contacted.

Spells of drizzle returned to Kota Belud beginning around 12.15pm today, and the weather remains cloudy.

Meanwhile in Tuaran, the SMK Sri Nangka hall and the Kg Bunga Tenghilan mosque which had sheltered 119 flood victims from 14 villages were closed today, although the disaster operation room is still active and remains on standby.
