State gov't, developer should be held responsible for landslide in Tanjung Bungah, says assemblyman

GEORGE TOWN: There are three hillside projects currently ongoing and less than 10 others awaiting approval from authorities, Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Chew said.

He said projects detrimental to the environment should be stopped at all costs to avoid yet another catastrophe in the state.

"I am against all the projects planned to be built by the hillslope. Even for this project here (at the landslide area) a report was submitted for review and I rejected it. But a few years later all that happened is that it has gone on even without my knowledge.

"I am saddened by this, some councillors even ridiculed me for objecting to these projects," he said in a press conference today.

He reiterated that two parties should be held responsible for the incident - the party which gave the approval and the developer.

"In this case, the one who gave approval is the state government. These two parties should be held responsible, at least," he added.

Assemblymen from the Opposition are mulling tabling a motion in the next state assembly sitting to halt all hillslope developments until proper studies have been completed.

Teh, when asked if he would support the motion, said that he will wait until was finally tabled before indicating his stance.
