Cancellation of beer festival for 'greater good' of country - Deputy PM

KUALA LUMPUR: The Better Beer Festival 2017 and other similar events were cancelled for the ‘greater good’ of the nation, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

He said three people were arrested over plans to attack during the festival, which was to be held at a mall here earlier this month.

He said the police were now collecting more information on the matter.

"We understand that the police have detained three people who planned to carry out an attack on the festival.

"I hope you understand that the police are colour blind. Whatever action that was taken was for the good of everyone," he said in reply to a supplementary question from M. Kulasegaran (DAP- Ipoh Barat).

Kulasegaran had asked Zahid if the police had identified the number of people involved and if any actions had been taken.

Last month, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun reportedly said the federal police had received intelligence that a militant group was planning to sabotage the beer festival.

The festival, which was supposed to be held on Oct 6 and 7, has been Malaysia’s largest beer event for the past five years. -- Reporting by Arfa Yunus, Laili Ismail, Fernando Fong
