Man with visual impairment proves disability no hindrance to ace in studies

KUCHING: Diagnosed with severe visual impairment when he was 11 years old, Pung Kay Suan’s world seemed to have darkened ahead of him.

The 27-year-old man, however, did not let the handicap stop him from pursuing his dreams and leading a normal life.

With hard work and support from his parents, Pung managed to complete his Master in Business Administration programme at the Sarawak campus of the Swinburne University of Technology here.

He was among 344 graduates who received their scrolls during the university’s convocation ceremony at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here today.

Pung said: “As I am slightly different from others, I have to work harder in my studies.

“However, I do not think I can reach this far without the support from my parents and other family members.

“I am just a human being with vulnerable emotions. There were times I felt like giving up but my parents restored my spirit and kept motivating me to continue,” he said after the ceremony.

Pung enrolled in a foundation programme at the same university about nine years ago.

Afterwards, he proceeded to do a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance before pursuing his master’s course.

“This is not the end as I am aiming for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). I believe I can do it.

“I hope my efforts can inspire other students to do the same, as you can excel in anything including studies with hard work and perseverance,” he added.

The convocation ceremony was preceded with the installation of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Abang Openg as the university's pro-chancellor.
