MASOC says will expedite payments to Sea Games' performers, volunteers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Organising Committee for the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (MASOC) is saddened by the accusations made against the body by several performers over payments.

In a statement yesterday, MASOC said it has made 70 per cent of the payments to the companies contracted to organise the opening and closing ceremonies of the Sea Games and Asean Para Games in August and September.

An upset singer Zainal Abidin said on Sunday that the organisers should pay the performers, as agreed in their contracts.

The issue first came to light when singer Adibah Noor took to Twitter, expressing her sadness that her friends performing at the Sea Games closing ceremony had yet to receive payments.

The other celebrities who performed at the closing ceremony included Ella, Amy Search and David Arumugam of the Alleycats.

MASOC chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said MASOC wants to expedite the settlement of all payments due to the parties involved.

“MASOC is now working with the finance ministry to expedite the payment process as we aim to fulfill all payments before the end of November.”

In regard to the Sea Games volunteers, MASOC said they have been paid their allowances after the claims were filed.

“However, there are still volunteers who haven’t been paid due to technical reasons such as wrong banking information and errors on personal details.”

MASOC said every complaint of late payments for the volunteers is to be completed within eight working days.
