Intoxicated tourist counts his lucky stars

MELAKA: An intoxicated tourist can count his lucky stars after surviving a fall from a three-metre high window of a cafe-cum-guesthouse, here, today.

The incident took place at Jalan Bunga Raya here this morning.

The 9am incident caught tourists and locals by surprise when the Australian tourist, landed on the awning after falling from the first floor of the guesthouse. He survived without sustaining any injury.

Jalan Kubu Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Razali Che Are said the department responded to a distress call at 9.15am and arrived at the scene at 9.19am.

"As soon as we arrived, the foreigner was on the awning roof which is about 1.2-metre height from the ground.

"It took us 10 minutes using ropes and a ladder to bring him down to safety," he said.

Earlier, bystanders had labelled the case as a suicide attempt but later discovered that the man was intoxicated and accidentally fell off the room window.

"If there hadn't been an awning roof below the window where he fell from, he would have sustained serious injuries as the height from the window to the ground is about three metres," said Razali.

The operation ended at 9.50am with the victim referred to the Melaka Hospital for checks.

It is learnt that the victim, Bachmann Justin John, a 36-year-old Australian tourist, had lived in the guesthouse two days ago.

It is also learnt that he was on a vacation with his compatriot friends in the historical city.
