Penang roads slowly becoming accessible as floodwaters recede

KUALA LUMPUR: Floodwaters which inundated several major roads in George Town today are beginning to subside, the Penang Island City Council said moments ago.

Floodwaters have started to recede on Jalan Gurdwara, Jalan Trang, the Lorong Macalister junction, Jalan P. Ramlee, the Jalan Macalister junction to Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong/ Lebuh Lintang, and the junction to Lebuh Campbell/Jalan Pintal Tali.

Meanwhile, Km 93.3 of the North-South Expressway (NSE) from Gurun to Sungai Petani, which was impassable to traffic since midnight, was opened to vehicles at 9.15am after floodwaters receded.

“(Only) the right lane has been reopened to road users in both directions (Gurun-Sungai Petani and Sungai Petani-Gurun).

“Road users are advised to use Jalan Alor Setar-Butterworth as an alternative route,” Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Saifi Abdul Hamid said today.

However, the New Straits Times has learnt that the Seberang Jaya Interchange connecting Permatang Pauh to Kulim near the Seberang Jaya roundabout is still heavily flooded as of 1.30pm, and commuters are advised to find alternative routes.
