Education Ministry to identify losses suffered by schools due to flooding

TASEK GELUGOR: The Education Ministry will identify the total losses suffered by schools affected by the floods in the northern states, particularly Penang.

Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the scale of the damage was big, with many facilities and equipment destroyed.

“This morning, I managed to visit SMK Datuk Haji Ahmad Said and I found the field as well as the laboratories and school’s cooperative, all damaged... and it is not minor.

“We will identify the losses from the floods here to determine the kind of assistance we can provide for repair works,” he said, when met at Sekolah Menengah Agama Rakyat Alr-Ridwan conjunction with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s visit.

Mahdzir said, for now, only six schools in the Seberang Prai Utara district here were used as flood relief centres, while the ones in Kedah have since closed.

On the ongoing Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, he said only three schools were involved in a change of examination centres, involving 766 candidates.

SPM candidates from SMK Jit Sin were moved to Jit Sin High School, SMK Mak Mandin to SMK Seberang Jaya and SMK Datuk Haji Ahmad Said to SMK Desa Murni.

Meanwhile, state Education Department director Shaari Osman said all 153 SPM candidates from SMK Mak Mandin will be transferred back from SMK Seberang Jaya, today.

“The situation in SMK Seberang Jaya is comfortable but we are certain that they will be more confident in their own school,” he added.

On damages suffered, Shaari said they had request for RM600,000 to facilitate repair works for damages due to the storm, and not the flooding.
